A security guard was arrested Friday night and preliminarily charged with murder in a New Year's Day shooting that killed another security guard and injured four others at a Far Eastside pub.
Sunungura Rusununguko, 29, Indianapolis, a security guard for the bar, turned himself in to Detective Ed Brickley at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police's Homicide Branch at 6:30 p.m., accompanied by his attorney.
He is believed to be responsible for the death of Ronnie Croom Jr., 30, a guard employed by a private security firm, in a shooting at Durty Nelly's Pub, 2805 N. Franklin Road, just hours after the new year began, according to police spokesman Sgt. Paul Thompson.
The others who were shot were hospitalized in stable or good condition.
Police are still trying to put the story together, but investigators have determined that people in the bar were causing a disturbance that security personnel attempted to move outside.
Those security officers included Croom, employed by Old School Security. The private security firm was hired by Normski Promotions, the group hosting a New Year's Eve event at the pub.
Rusununguko also was a security officer but was employed by the pub, police said.
According to police, Rusununguko followed the group to the pub's entrance, where the shooting took place. Police said he told them he did not see anything.
Later, witnesses told police they saw Rusununguko firing the shots that struck Croom and the four others. The gun has been recovered, police said.
Police did not disclose any motive for the gunfire or where the gun was found Friday night.
Rusununguko has no known criminal history, according to Thompson.
