SECURITY CALLED WEAK LINK
I take extreme exception to the article written by the A/P about private security guards being the weakest link. The key word here is "private" and their employers are not the police and were never meant to be. Many states do an excellent job at screening potential security officers and hundreds and even thousands of applicants nationwide are rejected mainly due to a minor criminal background. Most people are applying for these jobs are just trying to make a living and many work two or three jobs to support their families. Keep in mind that the guard and his employer at this point are no different than any other business providing a service to a client other than they are heavily regulated.
In 2006, 67 security officers were killed in the line of duty and more than two hundred others were seriously injured doing a job that few others would do.
While it is true that private guards need better training,( which is happening all over the country) and there should be an across the board license and regulations procedures in place, (something that the professional security industry has been trying to get for at least ten years)most guards are doing what they have been hired to do and many are going well beyond the call of duty. Thousands of security agents have college degrees, many are sworn in as peace officers and others are in charge of protecting the most sensitive businesses and companies and doing a better job at than you might think!
Cops go through extensive pre- background checks and post training after they are hired but it doesn’t stop a bad apple from slipping through the cracks and yet we depend heavily on them for law and order.
In America today, private officers outnumber public law enforcement officers 2 to 1 and that continues to grow.
Don't hate the person trying to do their job but try to keep it in context and let's get a more consistent certification for the officers so that we can know that they have all been hired and trained equally no matter where they are living or working.
