SECURITY SHOOTS BURGLAR; Editor-Rick McCann

Birmingham, AL. At Hayes High School last night at around 3a.m. someone set off the alarm system and two armed school security officers were dispatched to investigate. On arrival one of the security officers observed a suspect climbing out of a window and confronted the man at gun point. While handcuffing the suspect who has been identified as Alfonzo Turner, 24, he broke loose and began to struggle and both the suspect and the officer landed on the ground. According to the police report, it was at this point that the officers gun discharged striking Turner who underwent surgery at Univeristy Hospital and later died.
The security officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation which is routine for all situations like this. The officer is not employed by the Birmingham Police but is an employee of the City of Birmingham School Security Division.
