SECURITY OFFICER STOPS CHILD ABUSE
LAFAYETTE, LA. JULY 3 2007 A Lafayette mother is in the parish jail accused in a child-abuse case. The case is shocking for its degree of cruelty. 31-year-old Kendra Sam is jailed on two counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon. The alleged victim of the attack is her 11-year-old son. According to the sheriffs office Kendra Sam was attempting to discipline her son. However, the discipline went too far. According to deputies, Sam grabbed a sheetrock hammer and beat her son so severely he needed medical treatment. Furthermore, according to the sheriff's office, before the eleven-year-old received any treatment, Sam drove him around while she ran errands. He might not have received any treatment at all. The sheriff's says at one point the boy ran out of the car and hid in the Our Lady of Lourdes parking lot where he was found by security. The security guard there saw the child inside. He received medical treatment. He had broken wrists and laceration to arm and leg. Kendra Sam is still in jail. She is being held on a 21,000 dollar bond. Her son is staying with other family members. Sam does have other children who were home at the time of the incident, but were not hurt.
