Minneapolis MN. Dec. 31, 2007

An off-duty Minneapolis police officer shot and wounded an armed teenager Sunday morning, after the 17-year-old refused to drop his weapon as ordered.
The teenager, whose name was not released, was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale after the 12:10 a.m. shooting in the 400 block of W. Broadway, police said. The teen's injury was not life-threatening, said Sgt. Jesse Garcia, a police spokesman.
The officer was in uniform and working security for the Kemps dairy company when he saw the teenager shooting at the occupants of a parked van, Garcia said. The officer ordered him to drop his weapon, but the gunman refused. Fearing for his life, the officer shot at the suspect, police said. They said they didn't yet know how many times the teenager had been hit.
Garcia said he didn't know whether the suspect pointed his gun at the officer or made any threats.
It was unclear why the teen, who was on foot, was shooting at the van, Garcia said. The occupants were not injured. The incident is under investigation.
The officer, whose name was not released, is on paid leave, as is routine after officer-involved shootings.
Mike Oker, manager of a nearby business, said he heard about four shots, a brief pause and then about six more shots. He said he called 911 and then walked to the scene where he saw the suspect lying on the ground, moving his leg.
"That was way close," Oker said. "I was worried for my own safety."
