TOMS RIVER NJ JAN 8 2008

An Ocean County security guard crossing the street to raise the flag at the county complex in Toms River was killed today when she was struck by an elderly woman heading home from church.
Joann Russo, 57, of the Pelican Island section of Toms River, died shortly after being struck while crossing Hooper Avenue in a pedestrian walkway just north of Washington Street at 6 a.m., said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.
Mastronardy said Russo, who worked for Ocean County's security department since last January, was carrying the American flag when she was struck while on her way to the county complex to raise the flag.
She was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Marguerite Wejnert, 76, of the Holiday City section of Berkeley Township who was southbound on Hooper Avenue, the chief said.
Wejnert told authorities she was on her way home from nearby St. Joseph's Church on Hooper Avenue, where she goes every Monday morning, Mastronardy said. Russo was rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River where she died a short time later of her injuries, he said.
Hooper Avenue was shut between Madison Avenue and Washington Street for two hours while the Ocean County Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Unit conducted its investigation.
Wejnert, who was shaken up by the incident, was treated and later released from the hospital, the chief said.
