PRIVATE OFFICERS DEATHS/ INJURIES ON THE RISE..www.privateofficer.com

The National Association of Private Officers reported this week that the number of private security officers being injured or killed while on the job is on the rise. According to Jim West, CEO of NAPO, so far this year there has been approximately 67 deaths of guards here in the United States and we know of several hundred who were injured to some degree during the performance of their duties. We say approximately, West added because although we search daily for news articles and web postings and other sources, we know that we’re not being made aware of everyone who has been injured or killed. We also monitor the Department of Labor Statistics, OSHA and other federal websites but these are not updated as timely as we wished that they were so we have to say that our calculations are only estimates and firm counts of the ones that we have verified.
There are many other U.S. citizens serving in a security capacity for US Security Agencies outside the US in areas such as IRAQ and Afghanistan who are not counted in these numbers but should be West said. We need to realize also that many security personnel are injured during things like shoplifting apprehensions and disturbances at apartments and malls and these do not make the news headlines and aren’t reported and we’re missing most of those also. But from what we are seeing, violence against private security personnel is definitley on the rise and getting worse. I strongly urge all private security guard companies and in-house departments to better train and equip their officers to prevent some of these injuries and hopefully death.
Most security officers killed so far this year have been through violent acts including gunshots, stabbings and blunt force trauma according to the NAPO website.
