CAMPUS POLICE SHOOT AT SUSPECTS
MICHIGAN-JUNE 12, 2007
Campus police officers chased several suspects and shots were fired during a burglary.
No one was hurt, and two suspects are facing several felony charges, including assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
Dexter Marnell Scott, 22, and Cora Lee Hawkins, 22, were arraigned by Magistrate Sandra Straus in Isabella County Trial Court Monday afternoon for allegedly breaking into the Microchips computer store, and resisting and obstructing police.
Scott, who is alleged to have attempted to run over one of two CMU officers responding to an alarm at the store at about 3:15 a.m., is charged with breaking and entering with intent, a 10-year felony; assault with intent, a 10-year felony; assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; and two counts of resisting and obstructing police, a two-year felony.
Scott, who is listed online as a senior at CMU, posted 10 percent of a $10,000 bond and was released from the Isabella County Jail Monday afternoon.
Hawkins, a former CMU student who was kicked out of school in 2005 after being held in contempt of court during the grand jury investigation into the beating death of Demarcus Graham, was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny, a 10-year felony; and two counts of resisting and obstructing police.
Hawkins, who told Straus that she is attending Mid- Michigan Community College, posted 10 percent of a $6,000 bond and was released, according to jail records.
Hawkins, who also faced perjury charges in connection with the grand jury investigation, pleaded guilty to contempt of court Aug. 16 in exchange for dismissal of the perjury charge, Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick said.
She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and was released Sept. 19, Burdick said.
Although the university declined to name the officer who fired the shot, CMU Police Chief Stan Dinius said Sgt. Christopher Pryor and Officer Tom Smoker responded to the alarm at the UC.
Pryor and Smoker allegedly saw Scott fleeing the building, and chased him to the parking lot between Powers and Ronan halls, CMU spokesman Steve Smith said.
Once there, Scott allegedly got into a car -- where police said Hawkins awaited, Smith said.
One of the two officers fired his SIG Sauer handgun after Scott allegedly ignored orders to stop and instead started the car and drove at them, Dinius said.
CMU officials said the officer fired the shot in self-defense.
Scott and Hawkins allegedly continued to flee in the vehicle but were stopped at about 3:20 a.m. Monday by Isabella County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Mogg on East River Road near South Crawford Road in Union Township, according to police.
Investigators on Monday served search warrants on the car and were in the process of determining whether items found in the vehicle were taken from the store, the chief said.
Some items were missing from the store, Dinius said.
Lot 6 -- the parking area between Ronan and Powers -- was closed Monday while officers were investigating the incident, according to CMU.
