CALGARY Dec. 30, 2007 -- Police in Calgary say they fear criminals could soon be cruising the streets in armoured cars.
Officers say that police in Vancouver have already discovered gang members driving in cars and SUVs modified with armour plating and bulletproof glass.
Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta says that given the fluid movement of gangs, it's very likely the emerging trend in B.C. will travel east to Alberta.
Schiavetta says armoured vehicles would allow gangsters "to protect themselves from being attacked by firearms" or would "allow them to commit acts using firearms."
They also pose safety issues, such as improper braking mechanisms, and likely do not comply with safety standards.

Schiavetta says criminals may be driving armoured cars in the city already.
"We have to think if they've been seen out there (in Vancouver), they are here," said Schiavetta, who works with Calgary's Organized Crime Operations Centre.
"The gangs in Calgary are the same gangs that operate in Vancouver."
Police in Calgary say they've found several vehicles with disturbing vehicle modifications for gangsters to hide drugs and guns - often in secret, locked compartments.
But Schiavetta said they have yet to see or stop one that has been armoured like those in B.C.
He said Vancouver police found a Cadillac Escalade SUV with an armoured plate interior and a weapon storage area.
In other cases, they've found vehicles armed with viewing screens for cameras mounted onto rear bumpers and some with lights and sirens.
"Obviously, it would provide criminals the opportunity to feel safe and at the same time allow them to commit acts of violence from it," he said.
